Disaster Scenario
Step 1: Introduction, Initial Response, drought & Extreme heat

Observations: In lieu of emergent hot/dry conditions, we have been tasked with finding a way to restore vital power to our communication devices, and receive further aid.

Tour Observations

  • Berries? Mostly black, some red. Holly trees! Manmade overpass for dirt road over natural stream 2.5m top.
  • Slate belt; Piedmont. Sigle-tower
  • Bee farm: simple box on top of orange, white roof.
  • Carving of horse heads peaking from under an eagle’s wings.
  • Horses since into 1700s. Burch Graveyard. Slave Graveyard unmarked nearby!
  • Persimmons trees- deer love the fruit.
  • 60+ birdboxes. The “lesson log”Momma teaches baby mountain lion how to hunt.
  • Old tractor, old trunk. Pink Flowery trees- Hot Pink! Light Pink Flowers trees
  • “Civil War” “Two Houses, “The Walkabout”- pond scene, set top a hill, red roof, red flowers.“The fireworks” Dogs hunting quail, sunflowers, ferns, pond. Turkey CAFO w/in view.
  • Bats took over a truck “batmobile”
  • Copper accents so the black roof doesn’t remind him of New Jersey.
  • Some blackberry! Succulents w/ crepe myrtles
  • Spiders , Bees gave us a talking-to..
  • Barn Owl Footage: puff up & click when threatened
  • Longhorn Beetle Study: thousand of specimens encased
  • Riparian- “streamside”
  • Northern Bobwhite- threatened bird – $150,000 dollar grant ($37,000)
  • Umbrella species, representative natives species.
  • Marbled salamander.

Simmerings; Reflections
This morning, I was the first one up. The sun was still between the treetops on the east side when I cut out across the gravel, headed back from the stable office toward the lodge. My steel-toes dragged a little, so the tumbling of stones mingled with birdcalls and insects’ buzzing for that short trip, and again as I came away, devices in hand… headed back into the very literal field to collect data.

Summary: We were very successful in utilizing a solar panel to generate power for our communication device.
