Summary of My Experience

Morning Walk/Tour of So8ths
We started our day early with a nice morning walk and a tour of the surrounding area. It was peaceful, therapeutic, and showed how breathtaking the So8th is. It also demonstrated how connected all the ecosystems are. Within a single biome there are several ecosystems that interact and rely on each other. For instance, the pond covered with algae and grass, was covered by the shadow from the canopy of trees above. Allowing this environment to form.
Day Field Sample Collections With SC DEC
We proceeded to the next task where we entered the creek to collect water and biodiversity samples. This was like what we did at Phinizy Swamp, so it was straightforward, but still an enlightening experience. There is life that inhabits all areas of the creek. We found numerous samples under rocks and crevices, some of which were indicator species.
Discussion on Resilience (SCOR) – Bryan Rabon
Bryan talked to us about the importance of resilience after storms and the new systems being put in place to contribute to these efforts. I found this particularly interesting, coming from an area that is prone to hurricanes, I’ve witnessed firsthand survival and the importance of community resilience. We need better emergency systems and mitigation efforts to prevent life loss.
Evening Walk & 3C’s Discussion – Mike Elliot
Our evening walk was very eventful. Mike told us about his 3Cs: Courage, Consistency, Commitment. It helped me understand more that I can truly attain anything I want in this life, as long as I put the work in.
Campfire & S’mores
For our penultimate task, we made smores! I’ve never made smores so that was something I learned.
Night Moth Study – Kylie & Maya
We concluded our night with a moth study. It helped me appreciate the little things in nature more and how everything plays a role. These moths provide, but I also learned that moths are pollinators.
