Summary of My Experience

Morning Walk/Tour of So8ths
From my experience the Morning walk/ tour of so8ths was very peaceful because it was still early in the morning, the weather was still nice and we got to listen and identify different types of birds based on what we could hear. I feel like walking to the Thompson creek was nice. The water was very fresh and clear when we got there. I was talking to one of the other interns about how quiet and clear it was to the point that you could see some of the things that were in the creek. My favorite part about the walk/ tour was when we got to see the different bird houses that they set up for the birds and protected so that there would be no other animals messing with them.

Day Field Sample Collections With SC DEC
The day of Field sample Collection I would say I learned a lot of things, like in Justin’s presentation showing us how to catch stuff with a small seine net and we got to actually use it in the creek which was fun to do because it was something new I got to experience. When we got to Thompson Creek for the sampling I noticed that the creek was a lot different from the type of creeks that we usually go to because of the rocks on the buttons instead of sand/sands. I also got to learn how to collect field samples correctly. I used to just collect the water without being careful but I know that you have to be careful and make sure that there are no bubbles or sand in your sample.

Discussion on Resilience (SCOR) – Bryan Rabon
After Mr Rabon’s slides on The Discussion on Resilience I will say it got me thinking about it more because I feel like people don’t talk about what happened during or after disasters as much as we should. Instead, they decide to move to different areas where the same stuff can happen. In my opinion I feel like what Mr. Rabon do is a great idea because on one of his slides he talks about how people usually don’t try to stay after something happen they to their house they decide to sell their place and move to different are, so him and his team decide to do things that can help that area or prepare it for next time. For example, they usually elevate the house up a little after finding out that it could be flooded the next time there is heavy rain, I feel like that’s pretty smart to start to prepare for things before it happens instead of just waiting and seeing the damage that will happen after the fact.

Water Sample Analysis
I’ll say the water sample analysis was something I was glad to learn how to do because as a Biology major we don’t get to do a lot of hand on stuff at my school because most of our labs are online so I didn’t know how to use the Chemetrics when we first start using them so I was glad to have the opportunity to be more hands on the Chemetrics. I enjoyed using them for the first time because I was able to see the results on different element.

Evening Walk & 3C’s Discussion – Mike Elliot
I liked the evening walk because of how calm the camp site was. Seeing Mr Elliot come down was my first time seeing someone come down from a helicopter. I thought that it was pretty cool, and him talking about how he has a fear of heights I would not guess that he was scared of heights by the way he came down with a smile on his face even though he did something that scared him. Mr Elliot talk was very inspiring because I’m the first in my family to start a lot of things like I’m the oldest out of two, first gen to go to college, summer internship, collegiate sports and many other things it takes a lot of courage to be able to do those things and open a good path for my sisters since I’m the oldest I want to do different things to show my sisters that it’s okay to try things that you never did before. Using what Mr. Elliot was talking about the 3c’s really hyped me up more to stay focused and keep trying some more new things no matter what because you never know who is watching you that could give you a job because of what they see you do. Even though the talk about the 3c’s was not that long it really pushed me to do more things that I never thought that I would be doing this upcoming fall like signing up to conferences and meeting other people that are on the higher level.

Campfire & S’mores
The Campfire & S’mores was a relaxing thing for me because I feel like after a long day of working and doing different things everyone was tired, but it helped us get more comfortable and hand out because leaving the next day. This was my first time doing s’mores. I liked it because it was something different from what I usually do so I thought that was a good experience.

Night Moth Study  – Kylie & Maya
The night moth study was a good experience. I was glad to be able to see the different types of moth and learned about what types of moth that is here in South Carolina. I don’t usually like bugs being around but I was grateful to have the opportunity to learn about different types of Moths. Looking at the moth book that we had I didn’t know that it was that many different types of moths which was one of the reasons I was more interested when we went out to look at the traps.

Highlights
My pro(s) about the camping trip was that I had a lot of first times. I had the opportunity to try some new things that I really like. I learned a lot of things that I didn’t know before which I will be using when I go back to school. Overall, I’ll say the trip was a good experience. I learned a lot of things that I will be sharing with my family. I had a lot of good memories.

Dimmer Moments
My con(s) was that I felt like the camping trip went by fast and that we were rushing a lot because we were beyond time.
