Summary of My Experience

Morning Walk/Tour of So8ths
The tour of So8ths was to show the land’s importance to the ecosystem. There is a field on So8ths that isn’t mowed to ensure the fawns have somewhere to hide and rest in the day. The creek that runs through is a home to animals as well including deer, otters, beavers, frogs, salamanders and insects.  Keeping So8ths in the right hands is necessary to allow all these different organisms to continue.

Day Field Sample Collections With SC DEC
After the tour, we went to the creek for sampling. This also was when we looked at the different insets and amphibians of the creek. There are a plethora of mayflies and damselflies which are interesting to see as larvae. The sampling was relevant because it gave the correct way to collect. It helped me understand the  proper methods down to the way I stand in the water. It also showed me potential flaws to keep out for. While we (as in my group) were in the steam, another person was ahead of us causing sediment to move downstream onto us/our sample. gel)

Discussion on Resilience (SCOR) – Bryan Rabon
Once this was over, there was a resilience discussion. This was significant in highlighting working together during a tragedy. There is going to be an increase in natural disasters so it is crucial to be prepared for them. A community has to build each other up.

Water Sample Analysis
A community has to build each other up. At the end, everyone did water sample analysis. This was tedious but taught that it is good to be meticulous. Without being meticulous, the results of the water sample would have been inaccurate or inconclusive.

Evening Walk & 3C’s Discussion – Mike Elliot
Mr. Mike Elliot had a powerful speech that I am sure was inspiring to many people! I found his perspective insightful as well as his humor.

Campfire & S’mores
I don’t really like s’mores and I can’t have them anyway but it was nice being warmed by the fire.

Night Moth Study  – Kylie & Maya
I understand the importance of the night moth study. It showcased the biodiversity in such a small area. Many insects that are not moths also respond to the same lights. Overall every part of the camping trip correlated with environmental health, science and chemistry.

Highlights
I enjoyed having close to a real camping experience. It was enjoyable waking up to the sounds of birds. I didn’t realize frogs also sound similar to birds outside of the islands. I also enjoyed learning about the larvae of the creek because I would have never been able to understand what they become. It was nice having so many people enthusiastic about what they do.

Dimmer Moments
The tours felt too guided, I like having more freedom when exploring. Everything lasted too long, I am not used to staying up after 9 so to walk around looking for moths seemed unnecessary.
