Summary of My Experience

Morning Walk/Tour of So8ths
The morning walk was very interesting when we talked about the history of the land. The land was originally used for horse racing and the owners decided to dedicate the land to learning about the biodiversity within it. In my opinion, deciding to give up a part of your land so other people can study it is very considerate. Most people wouldn’t think or care about it.
Day Field Sample Collections With SC DEC
I never knew you could catch little bugs and fish in a net that had two sticks at the end. Seeing little crayfish was fun and looking at some fish swimming away was interesting. I do wish I had got a closer look but there were a lot of people in the water.
Justin L./Tori/Scott Talked about all the biodiversity in the area and how water greatly affects the species that lived there. For some species it is easier for them to adapt. Some species are able to tolerate certain conditions while others will suffer. Like how some mayflies are able to thrive compared to a regular black fly.
Discussion on Resilience (SCOR) – Bryan Rabon
We talked about how even after disasters happen people come together as a community to help each other out. And ways to manage situations when there are disasters.
Bryan Rabon- Talks about flood prevention and how areas have more potential to flood compared to certain parts. He also talked about how the government gets funding so people can be prepared for natural disasters and have houses built for them.
Water Sample Analysis
The water smelled like sulfur and had a lot of life in it. Such as baby mosquitos, dragonflies, and mussels.
Evening Walk & 3C’s Discussion – Mike Elliot
Commitment, Courage, and Consistency. It was a little shocking at first to see a bunch of purple dust come out of nowhere at first. But then when I saw a man jump out I had an idea that it was a little air show. I don’t know if I would jump out of a plane. I’m too injury prone for that. Mike Elliot- Very cool dude. It was shocking to see him say that he gets nervous still even after jumping out of the plane so many times. He seemed so calm and chill when jumping out from the air to landing on the ground.
Campfire & S’mores
Felt like I was back in Iowa with my Uncle and his wife and it was the 4th of July. I don’t usually eat smores. It kinda felt nostalgic. I might do it again when I go back with my family in Alabama. Too bad marshmallows have pork in it. There’s so many things holding me back from being vegetarian.
Night Moth Study – Kylie & Maya
During the Moth study we saw a One-Stopped Variant on the sheet that Kylie and Maya put out hours before. I really wanted to see a luna moth and a Blackberry Looper. Kylie & Maya- I asked Kylie and Maya which moth was their favorite. Kylie said hers was the Tiger Moth and the Grape Leaffolder. I liked how the Snowy Emerald looked in the book. It would have also been cool to see in real life.
Highlights
My pros about the trip is that it puts an entirely different perspective about nature and what individuals and the government can do to preserve nature. Being more conscious about what and how much we consume. It was fun seeing fireflies out. You don’t really see them out in the city so it was pretty to look at.
Dimmer Moments
My only con about the trip is wishing that the bonfire with the smores lasted a bit longer. But I’m ok with that. And it would’ve been cool to go kayaking on the river. Not during midday probably early in the morning.
